Called this one 14 months ago

Public Works Minister Senator Michael Fortier is set to announce today a probe into past public opinion polling practices... namely, Earnscliffe.

"The Conservative government will launch an investigation today into alleged Liberal-era irregularities in taxpayer-funded opinion polling.

Public Works Minister Michael Fortier will launch the probe at a Parliament Hill news conference this morning, casting it as the fulfilment of another election campaign commitment from 2006, according to government sources."

Humm... while all the hubub was going on about his appointment to Cabinet and the Senate, I said...
"Take a look at his background... HE'S A NUMBERS GUY, AND A LAWYER TO BOOT. A lawyer who's good with numbers, running the Public Works department?

Humm... with all the investigations that have come out of that office in the last 10 years, could it be that Mr. Harper is thinking LONG TERM? You can bet that he's gonna be digging up a whole lot of skeletons from in there!!! No WONDER the Libs are crying foul over the appointment... CAUSE IT'S GOING TO BE ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING TO THEM POLITICALLY!!!" (Thursday Feb. 9, 2006)
A couple of days later, I indicated that I was undecided about Mr. Harper's move, but I was going to wait a while to see what the results would be.

Well, it's 14 months later... and I'm 100% behind the guy, as you can see...

    To quote Paul Wells:
"This guy Michael Fortier's turning out to be a real 40-watter, ain't he?"

This is in response to the polling investigation Fortier has kicked off by choosing Daniel Paille, a known separatist, and more significantly, a person of questionable morals, given his PQ fundraising activities. To make matters even more bizarre, this investigation into taxpayer-funded polling practices only covers the years the LPC was in power.

    Transparent government, indeed.

I'd heard that the investigation into the polling was going to go back further than just the Liberal years, but don't quote me on that.

As for the pick, I'm out on that one myself. I'd like to know more of where he stands these days... is he more of a "soft nationalist" than a seperatist? Maybe he bailed on the Bloc as a result? Has he said anything on record stating such? Is this selection an attempt to appeal to those same "soft nationalists" in the next Federal vote?

    My answer? Dunno.

As for the "40-watt" comment, I agree, but only to a degree. True, he's not been in front of the cameras much, but having had the chance to meet him and hear his report on what he's been been doing in PWGSC, it might be better said that he's just keeping a low profile, and getting down to work.

That, and the fact that Belinda kinda upstaged him yesterday. ;-)
