BC Appeals Court reduces murder's sentence

The "gas and dash" dragging death we all heard about in BC a couple of years back is in the new once again... because some judges felt sorry for the murder/thief, they went ahead and reduced his sentence from nine years, to five years and ten months.

The family of the victim is outraged... and so is the provincial NDP justice critic disagrees as well. "[The new sentence] sends the wrong message to the public about the judicial system," said NDP public safety critic Mike Farnworth. "You either take things seriously, or you don't."

The man's crime(s)? "Grant DePatie, 24, was dragged to death underneath Pratt's stolen vehicle for several kilometres after being run over by the fleeing teenager." (who had just stolen a tank full of gas for his stolen car... three crimes in all)

Now, why on earth did the judges do this, you ask? The judges reduced the sentence "citing Pratt's young age, rough upbringing and aboriginal background". THIS is the kind of judicial activism that we, regular members of the law-abiding public, want stopped... NOW. This is why we in the CPC say that law-enforcement should have a seat a the table when choosing judges... to ensure that granting of these kinds of law flouting, crime encouraging sentences are ended, ONCE AND FOR ALL.

This is part of what the Liberal gov't did when they wrote up the "Charter of Rites and Freedoms" and forgot to add in responsibility's...

Did you know the worse that would have happened to the young native if he'd been a year younger (16) at the time he dragged the body 7 plus Kilometers and killed the young man who was trying to stop him from stealling $17 of gas... He would not have been tried or sentenced with anything because under the young offenders act being Native is a get out of responsibility for your actions free card...

I don't agree with you there... I don't think "being Native" is always a "get out of jail free" card... though I will agree with you that there is the PERCEPTION that it is.

Take the Caledonia situation, for example... we have yet to see various protester/vandals procecuted to the full extent of the law. I don't think they'll all get away with it... and if they do, Mr. McGuinty can kiss his re-election goodbye.

That would only be true if people cared, I have seen little evidence of people caring.

Said it before, say it again. Mike Farnworth is a great guy who is with us on a lot of`issues and would be a great CPC candidate.

We have an excellent legal system in this country. Unfortunately we don't have much of a justice system.
