Bill Casey... bad move on Mr. Harper's part

The one bad thing I have to say about yesterday's announcement...

"For the crime of standing up for his voters, Mr. Casey will not only be banished forever from party ranks, but Mr. Harper vowed to unleash his war machine to bring the riding back under Conservative colours." Don Martin, National Post

I don't think that was a good move. I think he should have left that one alone, and left the door open to discussions with Mr. Casey. Now, we may have given that riding right to the Liberals in any upcoming election, because we may have a vote splitting situation.

It's too bad.

Everyone is conveniently forgetting that Mr. Casey himself drew the line in the sand. Nova Scotia had to get BOTH the old agreement and the new agreement CONCURRENTLY because he said that is what he personally told his voters. A rip off for the rest of Canada - Yup!

Would not mean any MORE for Nova Scotia than the original announcement which was reinforced yesterday with added flexibility to opt for the best plan each year- Yup!

But Casey himself slammed the door on returning. He also bad mouthed his fellow MPs in a big way - Peter mcKay and Gerald Keddy to all who would listen (al la Danny Williams) so Casey himself has created the bad blood within the caucus.

Harper is right to not invite him back. Sometimes a true leader has to do what is right rather than what is popular even if it means losing votes.

People have to be able to live with the consequences of their actions.

If he thought that standing outside the tent and pissing in was the best way to represent his constituents, there is nothing wrong with that. It seems that granstanding and bluster goes a long way with the voters of the eastern fringe of the country. It might not get anything done, but apparently it does make you popular with the locals.

Nothing is stopping Casey from running again, but he just won't be doing it as a member of the CPC.

CC -- I agree with you. Bill Casey did not do a Garth Turner. He simply stood up for his constitents. He should have been welcomed back after this latest deal showing that he had a part in the process. The PM and the whole caucus would have looked good.

Now, Bill Casey need only run as an Independent and the good people of NS will give him a resounding victory to prove a point.

The whole matter seems petty to me.

I agree with both CC and Sandy. I think the PM blew this one.
