Alberta MP not running again
A sixth Conservatve MP has decided not to run again... Art Hanger, Conservative MP for Calgary Northeast, announced today that he will not stand for re-election.
That brings us to six Conservative MP's who aren't running again... of course, that's nothing compared to 16 Liberal MP's who are retiring...

I don't think that the number of MP's retiring means that much to any party. A few retire because they don't see a future for themselves in their Party; a few retire because they don't like the Leader of their Party and a few retire because its time to retire. It's the same in all parties and in all occupations, just replace Party with company and Leader with Boss.

Yes, attrition in politics does occur, and it seems like Hanger, who has been around a lot, probably has good reason to retire. Wishing him the best.
Its more worrisome for a party when they lose a strong candidate in a close riding or when they retire because of disagreements with the leader. For example, in Saskatchewan, the loss of Fitzpatrick as a candidate in the next election didn't make a big difference because the riding is very safely Conservative. Conversely Merasty the Liberal MP who left was a big loss because the riding is so tight that incumbency effects and his strong community ties helped swing the riding his way.
