Dion on veils in Quebec by-elections

I do have to give cudos to Mr. Dion for his comments in today's National Post regarding the issue of veiled women being permitted to vote by Elections Canada in the upcoming Quebec by-elections.
Liberal leader Stephane Dion, whose party is struggling to build support in the province, also opposed the move.

"We do believe that when they are casting a vote in elections, Canadian citizens have a responsibility to fully reveal their identities," Stephane Dion said. "For this reason, we would ask Elections Canada to reconsider its decision, and to require veiled women to unveil their faces to confirm their identities."
Now, the article seems to suggest that he's just making the statement "to build up support in the province", but to be honest, this was an issue he could have just left alone. He could have said nothing, but instead, he pipped up and threw in his two cents... which could, in all honesty, hurt him amongst the Muslim community in the upcoming by-elections.

And I tip my hat to him for that. It's the right thing to do. The democratic process is one of the cornerstones of this great nation, and we should do everything we can to ensure that it is protected.
