The Gun Registry, NOW UPDATED
Stockwell Day makes the long expected announement.
To all the nay-sayers, here are some highlights that should please...
The Handgun Registry - STILL IN PLACE
List of Restricted Weapons - STILL IN PLACE
Requirement for License in order to Obtain a Firearm (including background checks) - STILL IN PLACE
All of these measures, I support.

Sorry, but I can not agree with you.
While ANY change is a step forward, the things that are not being changed are still unworkable.
Handgun Registry: This database is so corrupt with bad information that the courts no longer relie on it as evidence. Ghost guns and non-existent guns are all through the handgun database. If it makes sense to kill the longgun registry, then that same logic applies to the handgun registry. Just because it has been around since 1934 is no reason to keep it.
List of Restricted Weapons: This is just cosmentics. Most of these firearms were placed on the restricted list by the last Liberal govenment because they looked evil - black plastic handguards, black stocks and handgrips. The same functioning rifle with a shiny wooden stock is not restricted - why?
Requirement for License: If they give us a license, then it is not a RIGHT, it is a PRIVILEDGE, which the government can take away at any time on a whim.
Instead, how about a criminal record check before obtaining a firearm? Valid until revoked by the state. How about a registry of people prohibited from owning firearms? Watch the criminals, not the duck and deer hunters.
I think that Stockwell is giving us what can be sold to the general public at this time. We will have to wait until after the next election and a Conservative majority government before they can address all of the items we want to get rid of.

And just because some of the data is no longer accurate doesn't mean that it should all be scrapped.

Jim Pook replies: In a word - yes.
What benifits does the handgun registry give us? None that I can see.
- It helps the police track stolen handguns. - OK, sure, but so does providing the serial numbers and description to the police when it is stolen - at a much reduced cost.
- It lets the police know where the gun is located. - And what business of the police is it where I keep my legally owned property? Does it tell them where the illegal handguns are being kept by criminals? No.
The registry only creates paper criminals.
The handgun registry was in such bad shape that when the Liberals brought in C-68 they had to have ALL the handguns re-registered because the data they had was so bad! They knew it then, and they know it now, but for some reason they insist on keeping it. Emotion, not logic.
And what happens 20 years from now when a Liberal government gets elected and bans all handguns? They have a list showing where they all are when it comes time to round them up.
Registration of firearms has only one purpose - confiscation. If not, then what IS the reason? It has nothing to do with crime control, and everything to do with people control.

The whole idea of registering guns is rediculous, registering criminals, and where they live and where they go at all times, and jail-time if they don't tell us, is a far better way to spend the money. Guns have never, will never, kill people. You know the rest of that line...and its still true. I'm so glad I never registered my guns. I will NEVER register them. I know hundreds of other gun owners that feel the same way. So much for the 'acuracy' of the registry. It was a farce, and will never achieve the stated goals sold to the public. It never would have done that even with 100% compliance, and 100% accuracy. It just bought a lot of votes to scared, ignorant and man-hating people in big cities that hadn't considered for one moment, that personal security is the sole responsibility of the individual. The police will be the first to tell you that they can't protect you. Just prosecute you, or take lots of gruesome pictures of your dead corpse. Basic human survival is entirely YOUR responsibility in all matters of self-preservation. The sooner the gun-fearing public realizes that its the individual's RIGHT to self defense, regardless of the laws, the better.
Buy a big gun, and when you are attacked, defend yourself. The police will be along much too late to save you, if you chose to be a victim, and also too late to save the criminal you just dispatched for being a dangerous thug.
You have a choice as to who's body is on the slab in the morgue. Demand the right that is, and always was, YOURS, and can't be taken away from you by assinine laws to the contrary.
