Gun Registry and Liberal Mantras

Just finished watching Global National. It's kinda funny, but sad, how I kept hearing the same lines, over and over again, in support of the Registry.

"The police make over 5000 searches a day on the registry". I saw one Lib blogger's site who made the statement, "If we keep repeating that mantra, we'll win!" (Yea, and if the public falls for it, then we really are idiots who deserve to have your Party to rule over us)

"This is a great law enforcement tool". The LIBERAL Ont. Attorney General said this over and over and over and over... He was also going on about how "it has been an invaluable tool for the Judicial system as well, in building court cases against the accused." I wonder how many of those cases would have never occured had the Registry never existed... because the only info they could possibly be using from it would be against people who lawfully registered their firearms.

David Miller's line was the best... "They shouldn't be srapping it, they should be expanding it... they should ban all handguns." (News flash David... Jan. 23rd killed that idea) Yep, Toronto Mayor David Miller... a Liberal.

I like this quote I once saw... "When you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns."

Most of the gun problem in Toronto is due to unregistered weapons. And for those crimes committed with registered weapons... shows how ineffective the Registry is, because it didn't prevent those crimes. Right?

We need to deal with the USERS of these guns... that's where the problem lies. A gun is not a problem until someone picks it up WITH INTENT TO USE IT. (or a kid is playing with it, but that's an issue of proper gun storage, which I strongly support) Root out those with intent, and a large part of the problem is dealt with.

Good point, Dirk, except you've been over-Americanized: it is the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) and not the American Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that administers such licensing and testing here in Ontario.

I only mention this because that's the only flaw I could find in the big, red, circle you drew in the logical flaw in the argument as presented here.

Give me a break! The point of the gun registry is an investigative tool. Are you so short sighted to not see how useful it is in an investigation?

Say someone is arrested with a stolen shotgun in Toronto. The police check the registry and find out that the gun was registered to someone living in Manitoba, who had reported it stolen. It turns out that the bad guy in Toronto has a friend who has a cousin who lives next door to the person in Manitoba. Now the police not only have the bad guy, but two accomplices whom they never would have known existed without the registry.

The registry has been used in countless investigations. Just because the Liberals mangled the program, does not mean it should be scrapped. If there turned out to be a financial scandal in the Department of Defence with spending overruns and massive budgeting mistakes, would you argue that we should scrap the military?

If the conservatives are serious about giving the police the tools they need to do their job - they SHOULD strengthen the program, appoint new people in charge and run it efficiently. Why do you think that every major police chief in the country is for the program?

Instead Harper does what one would expect, makes a politically expedient decision at the expense of common sense.

It may be hard to believe, but I actually support strong laws regarding guns... I just don't support the Gun Registry.

My chief concern is that I don't want to live in a socialist police state... where the authorities know everything about you. When all guns are registered, they can then all be taken away... which could be just a few elections away, should the NDP (heaven forbid) ever gain power. I'd like to know how the Russians under Stalin felt about not being able to own a gun.

I agree with the US right to bear arms, both as a means to prevent government repression, and as tools for those in more wilderness or agricultural situations, or for hunting. (I support the rights of hunters, but I'm not one myself... I don't think I could ever pull the trigger on a living animal)

The number one problem we're having with guns in the cities is to do with HANDGUNS... which I support the registration of. They are ALREADY a restricted weapon, and they should be closely monitored, stored, and transported correctly. It's the Gun Registry's heavy hand against law abiding citizens, hunters, collectors, and farmers, that I have a serious problem with.

Besides, as I said before, the real main problem is the GUN USERS, not the inert guns themselves. Let's get them off the street, and get the guns out of their hands with some REAL ENFORCEMENT of our existing laws for crying out loud!!! I find that many people (not all) who support the Gun Registry DON'T, for some strange reason, seem to support stronger enforcement against those who use them. It's the liberal value of looking at the criminal as the victim, which, to me, is revolting. You do the crime, do the time.

Actually, to stir the pot some more... if we really want to get serious about curbing gun violence, I've got a sure fire way... nah, that would just stir the pot WAY to much

But, to remind you, I don't own a gun, nor do I ever plan to. I just think that the government shouldn't be, as Trudeau put it, "sticking their noses into the bedrooms of our nation". (yes, yes, I know, different situation altogether... but just I like using old liberal quotes against them)

Ps - Christian, your point about being an investigative tool is taken, as I had not thought about that situation before... however, I still see more cons than pros to the Registry.

My main problem is, again, that the only times this Registry can be used seems to be against law abiding citizens who at one time registered their guns, and not the criminal element, where the problem of gun violence is rooted.

Now, imagine if all that Gun Registry money had been used on the enforcement side of things... more cops to track down the thugs who use the guns, and more money for the courts to process and convict them... etc.

    Dirk,

Have the costs of the MTO spiralled out of control as the long-gun registry has?

Is the MTO database used by criminals to steal cars in the same way that people with private gun collections (who haven't told a soul about their collections OUTSIDE of registering their firearms), guns which aren't even used for hunting, have had their homes broken into and their entire collections of guns ripped off?

Does the MTO database contain up to 20% of information that is incorrect or outdated, as the longgun registry does?
