Self-described "American"? www.ignatieff.ME

Ouch... good luck wrapping yourself in the Canadian flag there Michael."You have to choose what kind of America you want, right? YOU have to decide. It's your country, just as much as it is MINE" - Michael Ignatieff

Captain Canada? Me thinks not.

Sorta like my spoofed pic from the other week...

Just for clarity, is this site suggesting that because Michael Ignatieff spent some 30 years out of the country that he's less Canadian than someone who has never left Canada?

Wayne Gretzky has lived in the US for 21 years now, far longer than Ignaiteff ever did.

Are you telling Canadians that the Great One is no longer as Canadian as them?

I've lived abroad for much of my life yet I still consider Canada my home. Are you more Canadian than me?

Hey, wait, you were born in Britain. Am I more Canadian than you?

This line of attack will fly with those who are likely to vote Conservative anyway.

If this is the best you've got, it's pretty weak.

This whole site will be forgotten in a month.

Yep. The last time Iggy paid taxes or had anything to do with Canada, he was dancing the Hustle in his polyester leisure suit.

While the rest of us were busy building Canada, he was washing his hands of us.

...and i have a beef with people like Gretzky who wrap themselves in the Canadian flag whilst enjoying the fame, money and respect found in another country.

Parachuting into the country when and if it suits you DOES make you less of a Canadian. In Ignatieff's case, what's with all this we Americans, Kimo Sabbe? He self identifies with the Brits or the Yanks. That is the problem.

Such nonsense. It's my choice to explore the world God created and all it's people. If I choose to spend 7 months or 70 years abroad, my home will always be Canada.

I don't need Stephen Harper and his behind the scenes yobs telling me what it is to love Canda.

This line of attack will fail horribly for the Conservatives.

There is a big difference between Michael Iggnatief and Wayne Gretsky that being Gretsky isn't trying to become PM of Canada.Altho I would take him any day over Iggy.

What if Gretzky decided to run for public office one day?

I can answer this question for you sir. If he ran as a Conservative, his decades away from the homeland become meaningless.

If he ran for the Liberals, you'd turn on Gretzky like the rabid partisan hack you are.

I guess the idea was to pre-empt any attempt by the liberals to employ the anti-american hogwash.
In order to respond to this they have to go against the anti-american crowd in the liberal party.
Of course the liberals have never tried to sandbag Harper questioning his love of Canada.

But the thing the liberals overlooked in the ad that won't be missed in Quebec? That quote from Iggy saying England is his adopted homeland.

May I remind you, CC, that a good chuck of the federal cabinet were born outside of Canada (i.e. Tony Clement, Vic Toews)

If this is the best argument you guys can come up with, then bring on the election. I'm pretty sure the Grits will mop the floor with you.

King Iggy will lose this election. Liberals like me just cannot accept this.

Not really, I have the furthest thing to do with anything directly from the top of the Liberal Party. They can kiss my ass for all I care. I just think in general this ad campaign is really stupid, and I'm fortunate to live in a country where people are intelligent enough to see this for what it is: crass politics that have nothing to do with what a PM should be doing.

The idea that somehow you're not born in this country, or were born but spent most of your time outside of it makes you less Canadian is personally insulting to me. This is a country OF immigrants, it's not 1959 anymore. It's what defines us as Canadians, and I wish as a fellow Canadian you would see that.

This is like when Israel invaded Lebanon in response to the Kassam rocket attacks. These people live in Lebanon most of their lives and called themselves Lebanese, EXCEPT when it suited them. They claimed Canadian citizenship so they could get evacuated at the Canadian taxpayers expense

Here's a tip: if you're going to attack someone's patriotism, don't register your web site in Montenegro (.me) and host it in the US. And do put a "Français" link on it.

Months of work and that's all the research team could come up with? A quote that writing about human rights has deepened his attachment to the place on earth he calls home, and a joke he made 20 years ago that the Canadian flag looks like a Molson Canadian label?

Hey, for all the talk about Wayne Gretzky, he doesn't go on the news describing himself as American. There's something disturbing about Ignatieff's pining for attention and yearning for belonging in every nation he sleeps in. It's clear he'll return to the US if he loses, with the new "street cred" of a political career. Like Paul "I register my ships offshore" Martin before him, Ignatieff uses Canada as a nation of convenience, nothing more.

I would definitely want a Prime Minister of Canada to have chosen to live in Canada his or her entire life. This is what the majority of our born citizens have done due to pride and patriotism. The fact that hockey players, singers, actors have moved elsewhere is a ridiculous example of comparison to the leader of our nation. I am not concerned what party they belong to. Simply Canadian Strong!! I don't want any possible leader who is sitting on the fence with other foreign nations in terms of their allegiance, interests or idealisms. I've personally spent time in other countries and not once ever thought of calling a foreign country-'my' country. Not for a second! There should be a law in every country that you are a life long citizen and show proof of your alligiance.
