Dalton to Torontonians: YOUR TAXES SHOULD GO UP

Ho! Ho! What do we have here? Some advice to Mayor David Miller from the Hon. Dalton McGuinty... "The people of Toronto should have their taxes raised"!

Don't believe me? Read it in black and white.
Do responsible thing: TAX, Premier scolds Toronto
Spurns City's Bid To Put Shortfall Back On Province

Toronto city council should use its new taxing powers before coming cap-in-hand to the province for more money, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said yesterday.

In his first public comments since council decided to postpone a vote on two new taxes, Mr. McGuinty scolded councillors who backed the deferral, implying they had shirked their duties.
Wow, that's a new one for the Ontario Liberals... tax increases by proxy!

Well, it's not quite a broken promise, since he wouldn't actually be the one rasing their taxes... but it sure doesn't look to good coming from a man who said he would not raise taxes... "No, I really mean it this time around... honest!"

Mr. McGuinty, try telling that to the people of Toronto, who's taxes you've just said ought to be rasied. I think John Tory's chances in Don Mills just went up a whole bunch...

Now, I'm as conservative as the next guy, but I think Dalton has a point here. The reason Toronto is in need of increasing taxes is because they spend tax revenue in a completely frivolous manner on all sorts of socialist schemes that invariably don't work, but cost a lot of money. Toronto's socialist chickens have come home to roost, and now they want the rest of Ontario to bail them out.

So, for the first time I agree with Dalton. They should be raising their taxes rather than suckling at the province's teat. Its about time they be forced to account for their hair brained decisions.

I'm on his side in this one too. Every year toronto whines for cash and gets bailed out, all along saying "if we only had our own taxing powers like other major (US) cities, we wouldn't be in this mess"

So McGuinty makes Toronto the first city in Canada to get beefed up taxing power and the first year in the go cap in hand whining for cash again? I dont think so!

Not only that, the only reason the vote to raise taxes was deferred, wasn't on principle, it was because there was enough people who saw the upcoming election as the perfect time to squeeze the province for yet more cash.

The hell with them, they need to be told to get thier house in order.

Or how about they do like the rest of us, and try living within their means. Cut the wasteful spending, and perhaps they won't need to raise taxes or cry to the Province for more cash. Why does that option never get considered when Miller and McGuinty are involved?

Toronto's sky high taxes at the time of the Megacity amalgamation and after drove me away. Yes, they have the power now to tax in other ways and they ought to be constructing a better mix of taxes to encourage productive citizens in the 416. But staying the hand on ever-increasing taxes also needs to happen at both levels of government.

How to create a third world régime: start with a first world one, tax in an unbalanced manner, wait for the rot to set in.
