Tommy Douglas and me... we both agree
Just been listening to the CBC, who have been doing a show on Tommy Douglas on their "Ideas" program.
I'm really looking forward to the CBC special on him. From the sounds of it, I'd probably line up really well with what he believed and supported in life, religion, and politics.
I find it interesting that the NDP and the left point to him as their forefather and figurehead. Don't forget, he was a good old Baptist preacher... he stood for social justice back when it really was an issue of social justice. He would NOT have stood for this psudo-social justice we have today, where people are trying to redefine "rights", and throw out social and moral standards that have stood for thousands of years. Tommy Douglas would roll over in his grave if he saw what people were doing in his name today.
For shame.

Douglas never advocated a system designed to serve health care unions as its primary function - the system we have today.
As I understand it his focus was on providing health care to people for the sake of the people recieving it.
Contract workers who hope to eventually get full-time jobs do all the heavy lifting today - the unionized workers concentrate on beefing up their benefit packages, patients come second.

Preston Manning said in his first book, The New Canada that he used to taunt his Marxist classmates with NDP literature that proclaimed themselves as, "a Christian party". I think Mr. Douglas would have a lot to say to Dr. Layton et al if we could reanimate him and let him loose at a convention.

Anyone who "lined up well" with Tommy Douglas' views would not vote Conservative. Socialists don't vote conservative. Even religious socialists.

You forget that Tommy Douglas was also a Freemason and thus someone who no matter how Christian saw the need to seperate the church and state in Canada. What he did do was lecture the establishment on its Christian duty to serve the poor, the weak and the helpless. Which would still run counter to the Ted Byfields of the social conservative right.

As a self-described Born-Again, you and Douglas are worlds apart. I hope you understand that his social stands were a product of his belief in building the kingdom of God on earth through human effort, i.e. salvation through works. I must also note that he was an advocate of eugenics, which is not far removed from abortion. There are many varieties of baptist, not all of them good.

One could argue that Douglas' greatest achievements came during his time with the CCF - before it merged with the Canadian Labour Congress to form the NDP. The NDP seems to be a bit like the Conservatives in that it has or has had at least two separate camps struggling for internal power. Anyways, it would be interesting to examine Douglas' theology and how it compares to your average Conservative-Evangelical branch that seems to be found within the CPC. I did a bit of digging and did find something of interest.
