JACK JUMPING SHIP?!?!?
UPDATE - It's prostate cancer, get well soon Jack!

WOHA... The National Post is reporting via Twitter that, NDP Leader Jack Layton to "make an announcement about his personal status and his immediate future as NDP leader".

THIS COULD BE HUGE, stay tuned, press conference at 2PM EST

UPDATE: Rumour is via Kady O'Malley that he's just announcing a temporary stepping down for health reasons.

UPDATE II: Consensus seems to be growing that he's going in for back surgery... which means there's NO WAY we're going into a Spring election, as the NDP will be more than reluctant to jump into the fray without their leader. Which is likely why he's doing it now... perhaps he's got some good intel that says Iggy won't change his mind about forcing an election, and therefore Jack wants to get it done now to be ready for a Fall or 2011 campaign.

UPDATE III: Layton announced that it's prostate cancer, and that he will be remain as Toronto-Danforth's MP, and Leader of the NDP, during his treatment. All Canadians wish him well, and I know I will pray for a speedy recovery.

Quitting the NDP to go start a new Mac Pap jihadi battalion fighting for the Taliban.

He's such a good little Internationalist.

Bob Rae has made him an offer he can't refuse. Once they get rid of the power of the PM to prorogue parliament (the only tool that prevented the Dion troika takeover) the way is clear to install Ignatieff with no election. Then Rae bumps Ignatieff.
The only thing standing in the way was Layton's ego. So, my guess is the truth is in the backrooms- Layton temporarily steps down for back surgery; the Liberals and NDP and BLOC line up their ducks-install Ignatieff and when Jack "heals" he becomes Finance MInister in the coalition government and Canada goes down the tubes; business investment dries up and Western Canada leaves the confederation and Duceppe proves Canada does not work and gets his own country of Quebec.
PowerCorp owns them all and the elite are happy once again to have their hands in our pockets.

Get well Jack. Even though I don't agree with you I still don't want to see you suffer unduly.

Anyone want to bet that one of his first post surgery visitors will be PM Harper?

I don't care for Mr. Laytons views or politics, but I wish him all the best in his up-coming battle.

I wish him the best, and I still strongly disagree with his politics. I watched his press conference, and generally I don't expect people to be smiling and happy when announcing a serious illness.

Best wishes Jack. I hope the Mayo clinic is able to provide you with first rate service.

If there is some limited benefit to to be found in this for Jack, it's that one commonality shared by Christianity and socialism (you know -- the social gospel and Italian neorealism) is that they both deal enough in martyr-style complexes to enhance the appeal of their leaders amidst mortal suffering.

I heard the news. Of course, I hope the guy gets better - it's easy for political differences to trivialize the fact the death of people who've devoted their entire lives to public service is rarely, if ever, a cause for disrespect.
