Garth Turner attacks Senator Mike Duffy

Not so fast there Garthy-boy... he put up a post at this afternoon, entitled "For services rendered", with a pic of newly minted Senator Mike Duffy... just what were you trying to imply there Mr. Turner?

Of course, he's quickly pulled the post down before I could get the screenshot... but I managed to get this screenshot of the header from Liblogs.ca.

UPDATE: I now have the cache... he didn't add any of his own commentary, just reposted one of the news releases about the appointments. Still, the title he chose certainly implies a whole lot.

The HOC is worse off for not having Garth as an MP.

We need more mavericks in parliament.

Why is it that only Wellington, Halton, and Guelph can elect mavericks?

The rest of the country is missing out!

Guelph? Mavericks? Oh, guess you didn't see the news... Frank "flip-flopped" on his "maverick" anti-coalition position the very next day.

Looks like the party brass got to him... so much for being a "maverick".

Good on Duff to be appointed to the Senate. I love the local media's take on these appointments. I believe the headline read, "Stacking the Senate" Oh yeah, really stacked when Liberal Senators outnumber even the increased number of Conservative candidates by what 20 members? Yup, it is stacked, stacked with Liberals. At least now there is a little more parity.

Mike - SURELY you jest - Garth Turner is no "maverick"; Garth Turner is a bitter wanna-be that never achieved what he was in his own mind.

Turner got a raw deal right from the start.

Follow me here, when the Cons came to power in '06, they only had 3 MP's with past cabinet experience, one of which they had to buy from the Liberals (Emerson) The other two were Rob Nicholson, who was given a portfolio, and Turner, who was not.

How can you NOT include in your cabinet an MP with past cabinet experience, especially when you only have 3 MP's in your caucus with such experience?

The CPC had it in for him right from the start.

    Mike Wisniewski

P.S. I think Duffy will make a good senator, too

This fat pig just got some sweet pork.

Harper promised he would never do senate appointments. Appointing senators when he has prorogued Parliament to avoid the non-confidence vote is disgusting politics.

"How can you NOT include in your cabinet an MP with past cabinet experience,"

Maybe because they found out that Garth was only about Garth while they were in opposition and knew that he was not suited to a cabinet post. Given how it turned out - they were obviously right.

Turner took the gas pipe when he started reporting on confidential meetings of the Conservative caucus.

Any holes ripped in his posterior were of his own making.

The federal Conservatives owe him nothing.

Anon@3:10pm... and just who is the disgusting "fat pig" you're referring to?

I think comments like that are somewhat more endemic of a disgusting pig, don't you?

    Garth never sat in opposition.

    Elected in '88, lost in '93, re-elected in '06

Harper's first cabinet would have been stronger with Turner in it and, who knows, with a cabinet post to lose instead of a caucus seat, he might have been better behaved.

Besides, if he wasn't suited for a cabinet post, then why did Campbell have him there in '93?

Anon@3:10pm - The comment says more of the person who wrote it than the person he wrote about.
I don't always agree with Duff, but I emailed him a few weeks ago when the coalition threatened - Duff stood for Canada that night for sure - and he will make a good Senator.

Um Anony....So appointing senators after you have prorogues is disgusting politics, huh.

Wednesday, December 10, 2003 | 10:39 PM ET CBC News

"Prime Minister Jean Chrétien has appointed his own director of communications to the Senate, two days before leaving the office that gives him the right to make such decisions."

Jim Munson is a former television journalist who worked for CTV for 23 years before being dropped in a series of layoffs in 2001.

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/chretien/senate_apptments.html"

But Anony....Of course he had prorogued parliament a few weeks before just before the auditor general brought out her report.

    Nov. 13, 2003
Two days before federal Auditor General Sheila Fraser is to release her report on the federal sponsorship program, Chrétien prorogues Parliament; his October 2002 ethics bill dies on the order paper. http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/groupaction/timeline.html

I guess disgusting depends on the side of the aisle you sit on, right Anony.

    ''Garth Turner is no "maverick"'

If The Garth was a maverick, he would have stayed an independant.
The Garth foamed at The Mouth about floorcrossing without a byelection,
and then....crossed the floor without a byelection.

The Garth is exactly where people of Halton wanted him...OUT.

Why did you have to bring up that Jacka%^ for, he was dieing a slow dearth. The snake oil salesman from Halton would of disappeared in the next could of months, you just had to ignore him. Now you've put his name into lights and we will have to put up with his antics for a bit longer. ignore him and he will slither away into the hole he came from.

    "Elected in '88, lost in '93, re-elected in '06"

Mike W., you forgot to mention that it was 2 different ridings that elected him 1 time each. He was never re-elected in the same riding, the boundaries changed, that riding went with Michael Chong.

    Fair enough

I stand corrected on the electoral history.

To address Wilson's point though, Garth addressed the floor-crossing question in his press conference the day he made the announcement.

He didn't leave the CPC, the CPC left him. Apples and oranges.

Also, to better serve his constituents, he joined the Liberals. Parliament doesn't treat Independent MP's and party MP's equally. He was just playing by a set of parliamentary rules that we desperately need to change.
