The Liberal elite's solution for democracy

In yet another backroom deal, the elite in the Liberal Party brain trust have taken care of the issue of "grassroots" democracy, in their typical arrogant fashion. With Bob Rae dropping out, the new Liberal leader, Michael Ignatieff, has selected, NOT elected. So much for letting the membership have their say.

They've told the grassroots Liberal membership, "You can have Iggy, or you can have Iggy... your choice"

I guess at least they're being consistent... if they were going to deny the voters a chance to select their government, why should they have to let their own membership have a say on who their leader is?

Well, for those Liberals still interested in the "grassroots" democratic process, I've got your solution right here.

Don't think of it as betraying your party... think of it as a short term investment in democracy. Besides, it's the elite within your party that have betrayed you, right? Our tent is big enough for everyone who cares about democracy. By taking some time to ride out the collapse of Canada's "Natural Governing Party", you'll make some new friends, and who knows... you may even decide to stick around.

Ignatieff has been selected by caucus as per the national executive rules which were ratified BY PARTY MEMBERS.

It's tiring to watch someone who is essentially being asked by many members to take the helm being accused of nabbing it.

The word coronation is overused. Besides, he is only interim leader until it is ratified by the membership.

    I second that exactly!

I can shout out loud that Harper actually eats babies. It doesn't make it true.

Misinformation campaigns work at the expense of the average voter, who's turnout says it all.

There is too much at stake to turn to GOP and Alliance tactics of yore.

Iggy reminds me of actor Sam Waterston who is always playing a lawyer - must be the eyebrows.

If the Liberals are just going to pick a leader, how about a woman for once - way overdue.

How come the conservatives didn't pick Belinda Stronach?

I agree, Ignatiaff wasn't "chosen" under ideal circumstances. This is exacty why he was attempting to maintain a normal leadership convention in May. However, the strange crisis the country currently finds itself in, thanks to Mr. Harper, something had to be done to solve the Liberal leadership issue. Kudo's to Bob Rae for being a truly class-act. All I can say is, Unusual Time call for unusual methods!
