Dion ready to pull the trigger?

I dunno about you, but things like this make it look like they're prepping to finally pull the trigger.

Are these targets like the ones they made for Kyoto, lots of lip service with no real delivery? It would be so easy to be a liberal, say anything you want and not actually have to do anything.

There must be some mistake. The Liberals solved child poverty with the 1993 Redbook.

Yep, child poverty was supposed to be gone by the year 2000 under the Libs.

This promise is gonna go down like their Kyoto policies, people will just ask why they couldn't do it in the 12 years they were in power.

Oh come on guys let Dion Quixote tilt at the poverty windmill one more time. His party missed the sails three times already so I think it only fair that we let him set up a National Department of Poverty NDP for short and we can all wave goodbye to TaliJack and the dippers. Good idea no?

Yep, you can take that plan/promise to the bank, just like all the others the Liberals have made good on over the years....(snicker)....

Actually, the goal to eliminate child poverty in Canada by the year 2000 was set in 1989, during Mulroney's government, but as an all-party initiative. Harper uses Statistics Canada data to claim that child poverty has dropped from 18% to 11% over the years 1995-2005, which would be Liberal years. However, this data (which technically is children in low-income households) is disputed by various groups, as there is no official classification of child poverty.

In any case, focussing on reducing the number of children living in poverty is a laudable, but difficult, goal as many of these children could grow up to contribute much more positively to society if freed from the circumstances surrounding poverty. Rather than make fun of Dion's goal, I would encourage all parties to attempt to address this problem in the best way they can. I grew up on welfare and did fine, but many of the children I grew up with, who lived under similar circumstances, did not. In some cases the cost to society over the longer term was substantial -- just in my small circle.
