And they say negative ads don't work?

Just an observation from last night's football games, during which the Party spent loads of cash to run the new Dion/GST spots.

I met up with a friend at a local pub whom I haven't seen in some time, half watching the games, half catching up. Anyway, one of the Dion spots came on, and it was interesting to observe the reactions.

Sitting about 20 feet away were some young guys, watching the game. From the looks of them, you'd assume they were Liberal, or at least left leaning, maybe Green or Dippers. Anyway, when the spot came on, one of them made an offhand negative comment about the ad. But then, interestingly enough, for the next 8-10 minutes, proceeded to discuss politics in general... the Federal parties and their leaders, a couple of big policy items that are on the public's mind, and the recent provinical election. They were talking about the issues that matter for the rest of the commercial break, overtop of the game when it came back on, and into the next commercial break.

I don't know about you, but I'd call that effective... getting a bunch of guys who didn't seem to be normally politically motivated actually talking about the leaders and the issues.

Now... just imagine that scene being repeated in say, even a mere 30% of the establishments and homes that were watching the big game yesterday... THAT'S an effective politcal strategy. Who knows how many people, if not convinced by the spots, were at least open to the idea of what they had to say?

That's how you grow your share of the vote... nicely done guys.

    Stereotype much?

I prefer to think of it more as visual polling... and I've got a pretty good batting average. ;-)

I agree with you C.C., even people who are apolitical are beginning to discuss some of the issues. Harper has a way of hitting on what is important to average Joes.

'visual polling' Haa haa. Just like you can pick out the ones that have 'the gay', right?

You don't have a good batting average. You just think that you do, and that is even more indicative of prejudice.

Anon, to quote a professor I know of, "You don't know what you speak about!" ;-)

To quote another professor, "Excuse me?"

Man, I was joking around... relax! Just relaying some personal observations. I'm never perfect (one guy I took for a left-wing hippie turned out to be a hard-core CPCer economist!) but I've been known to get a good feel for the room wherever I go, that's all I was saying.

Wow, C.C. It seems they don't like being called "the left". How about "right-challenged"?

Considering the anguished cries of 'stereotypes', 'gays' and 'ass' coming from some apparently left-wing types, you must be doing something right. ;)

"are you this much of an ass in real life?"

    kettle, meet pot..

The number of people whom i have talked to (that had the message conveyed to them that Dion was not a leader)seem to think the ads work just fine..it just rolls off the tongue..'it's not fair!'

Anon@4:17, as for picking up on "the gay" as you so insensitively put it, I don't normally even look at/for that... it's pretty irrelevant to me.

Case in point... interviewed for a job about 6 years back, and picked up on the fact that the guy interviewing me, who I'd be working for, was openly gay.

I took the job... because people are people, we're all the same.

Please don't make assumptions of my character based on your preconcieved notions on what "Christians" are like. I try to be as much like Christ each day as I can be, though I fail miserablly most days.

My husband said - the last thing he wants during a football game is to think about politics, Afghanistan, climate change and the soaring loonie - he is a man that works hard, pays his taxes, in fact works far more hours than a lot of people and just wants a couple of hours to not think about it.

He says the ads during a game are an insult to him.

The last time this happened my husband and his buddies were so insulted by Harper trying to manipulate with misleading material they used the time to ads were on to go to the washroom or get more snacks and beer.

Can't people have a break once in a while from Harper? Enough already.

Those swayed by them are pretty weak minded and are allowing Harper to interrupt their lives.

Anon at 7:58 AM... The ad merely stated pretty obvious truth to me about the weakness of Dion, and his poor policy positions. It's one of the more accurate ads I've seen, actually.

    It should sway people.

I saw the ad, and felt it was more of the same lowest-common-denominator appeals we've seen from the CPC. It's very misleading, presenting facts and quotes in isolation of their proper context. Maybe an idiot would look at the ad and be swayed, but normal people would look at the ad and say "gee, maybe the Conservatives aren't exactly presenting the Liberal position fairly".

... from the people I've chatted with, I'm hearing stuff like "what's with the new Conservative character assassination ads?"

This goes a long way in interpreting the stall of CPC numbers at the polls -- they come off as petty and mean.

    And while I'm at it...

CC, this post, like many others here, is rich. Didn't you make a couple angry posts a few weeks ago about how disgusted you were with what you interpreted as negative Liberal comments about the CPC?

You "try to be like Christ"? You figure Christ would endorse the death penalty? You're nothing like Christ and an abomination to his teachings.
