Making a Mistake
The SSM vote will take place today... and dealing with the issue like this is a mistake.
My own MP, who originally voted against SSM, has also flip-flopped on the issue, and will now vote to oppose re-opening the issue. If you or your staff are reading this, I'll just say it's a good thing you've already announced your retirement... otherwise, you'd get ousted on this issue alone.
This is not going to solve anything. The opposition is still going to try and roast us with the "bigot, racist, sexist, homophobic" labels, and it's only going to serve to frustrate many within the Party who oppose SSM.
For the record... one of the reasons for the split of the old PC Party was that many on the right felt that their views were not being respected, or their voices ignored. Let's hope that the powers that be DON'T make that same mistake.
Tories under attack from right and left over same-sex marriage motionSome Liberal MP's who oppose SSM are stating that they are going to vote against this motion because it's hollow... but I think that's just a face saving excuse.
OTTAWA (CP) - The gay-marriage debate landed back in Parliament on Wednesday with a thud that could shake Tory support on the religious right.

And now that this motion has been defeated as predicted, can we get off the SSM topic once and for all and move onto more important issues?

I sure hope so. I doubt it.... but we can hope, right?

Nope, sorry.
As I've said before, my view of history is that moral decline, as seen in the approval of SSM, is ususally one of the last stages before the collapse of a society.
For the love of Canada, we won't give up.

As far as I know, Harper said that if the motion is defeated, he's going to forget about it. He realizes that if he goes back to the issue again, it'll make him look like a sore loser, and considering the motion was vastly unpopular this time, it's only going to get worse. So who is "we"?
And can you please tell me where in history a society has collapsed due to so-called "moral decline"?

I doubt it, as that's nothing more than yet another Christian urban legend.

Not that there's anything immoral about SSM, of course (except for in the imaginations of certain religious people, perhaps).

Biased, bigoted, unethical and prejudiced but certainly not immoral.

Drew,
I apologize. I read MSM instead of SSM. My comments are not applicable to SSM only to the MSM.
I have a whole different set of comments for SSM ;)

Yes, because I can see how myself and my partner - both who work FULL-TIME JOBS, both who own a home together - BOTH who support Windsor, drive cars, pump gas, put money back into local businesses and have BOTH NEVER HARMED A FLY IN OUR LIVES - are going to contribute to the downfall of societ. How do you expect gay people to NOT be offended by such words. SHAME ON YOU. SHAME ON YOU. SHAME ON YOU. That is absolutely disgusting. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs - but I WILL NOT BE BULLIED ABOUT BEING BAY AS AN ADULT THE SAME WAY I WAS WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER.
You'll never give up? Guess what - GAYS HAVE BEEN AROUND LONG BEFORE YOU - and we will be here LONG after you are dead and gone. Therefore - we WILL NOT SETTLE FOR BEING THOUGHT OF AS ANYTHING LESS THAN EQUAL in the EYES OF OUR COUNTRY - which is JUST AS MUCH YOURS as it is MINE.

In response to dan macdonald: Marriage, as we know it in the west, is a strictly Christian institution. Sure, in the last hundred years or so, government has decided to issue licenses, and redefine it. My question is this: Why do gays want to get married? If they were to be really honest with us, I would be willing to bet that most of them don't even believe in the institution of marriage. Why do they need that recognition when under the law, they already have it?
