"Canada... this is OUR war"

Rosie DiManno has an amazing article on the foiled terror plot in Toronto.

In it, she basically says "Canada, WAKE UP... this is OUR WAR now. They came here to kill us, to KILL YOU."

I don't care what you think about George W. Bush, the War on Terror, Iraq, Afghanistan... but don't you dare forget that they brought this war to YOUR doorstep. They went about gathering together the means TO KILL YOU. Now, what do you intend to do about it? What would you like your government to do about it?

Better question... life or death? Your choice.

    _I had to double search for it in the paper. I finally found the article printed on the back page of a Sunday Special Report subsection after favorably glowing bios of the suspects.
    _This Dimanno column was evenly paired with a sympathic of the accused response by Thomas Walkom. Her well known lead photo was absent.
    _In fact, the Toronto Star's entire overtly 'sided with the accused' day-after-day tone throughout its headlines, selected photographs & descriptions, and article content is cause for me to CANCEL my subscription in short order!

    Well, talk about a false dicotomy.

    I fail to see how this is an actual choice for anyone. You don't actually believe that this is the decision that we are faced with here do you?

    True, no one is holding a gun to anyone's head at the moment and asking them to make that choice, this minute. But I do feel that we're at a crossroads, and the decision we make now will dramatically affect the outcome.

    The real question was the one I posed earlier... "What do we intend to do about it? Roll over and die, or stand up and say "NO! This is unacceptable to us" and then do something about it.

    Now, of course, the "what to do about it" is entirely up for debate.

    Except, nobody's really saying that we should roll over and die. Other than having the authorities to continue doing their jobs the way they have up until now, I don't know what more we could do.

    Sure, I suppose we could all have pitchfork-weilding mobs chase every Muslim in the land down and lynch them, but I think that's probably not the wisest long-term plan. Or we could become a radical Islamic regime like Iran, but I don't think that's particularly wise either.

    I know! Let's tell everybody that every Muslim is an avowed enemy of us and we should propagandize the entire country. Muslims = bad. Islam = violence. Canada = good. Let's keep these dividing lines really sharp and continue to beat that drum, and see how that works out.

    I was going to add, and deleted, that this would be an inappropriate usage of pitchfork-weilding mobs, who are usually focussed on hunting me down. Redeploying them would inevitably allow me to escape and cause further harm to our social infrastructure.

    Has anyone else noticed that she failed to mention that they'd been under surveillance for two years now and that they bought the ammonium nitrate from the RCMP?

    I love the comment: "If the accusations prove true, this isn't just slumming with jihad. For the benighted who claim that the war on terrorism is terrorism: Here is your war."

    As if you can't be against the attempts of Bush & Co to link up the war on terror with the occupation of Iraq and believe that terrorism is a legitimate threat. A great example of hyperbole.

    Technically, it's called the fallacy of false dilemma. But I think he was referring more to Afghanistan than Iraq.

    Actually, I'm more of a taser kind of guy. Tasers weigh less than pitch forks, are easier to handle, keep you further from your quarry, and tend to be less fatal.
