I called it... sort of

This Calgary Sun article says the same thing I said about the Liberal leadership... the one who takes it needs to be someone who is willing to never set foot in 24 Sussex. However, he also mentions rumours that 10-12 Liberal MP's are considering swapping sides, Emmerson style.

Even if they broke off to form a new centre party, a TRUELY centre party, that could also be a good thing for Canadian politics... and will keep us in the PMO for at least 6-12 years... also a good thing for Canada. ;-)

    As usual the Liberals are all huff and puff..all sizzle with no steak.
    Graham looks like a fool but that's ok. It looks good on him.
    Bring down the government and find out what happens to the Liberals. They are already dead in Quebec and the West.

    This provides some smoke above Bill Graham's fire.
    He's huffin' and puffin' to let any dissidents know that he controls the Liberal nomination process and might be able to cause an election, after which the protestors would either run as a Tory or a New Liberal or something else without the Big Red Machine behind them (which doesn't have much traction these days).

    I think a few things are missing from the article.
    1. The press in the east will not be kind to Harper. They tend to be anti-christian and are pro Liberal. This will make any gains in Ontario and Quebec very difficult.
    2. Just because the taps have been shut off in Ottawa doesn't mean that the Liberals can't get money from "other" sources. As the article implied, a lot of people owe the Liberals favours.
    3. Harper is going to have a big fight on his hands in Quebec. The separatist forces are gathering momentum again. Harper will be held to account for this Liberal legacy. It's not fair, it's reality.
    4. Harper is a calm individual with a steady hand. The press will not like this. Calm seas do not make ratings, tempests do. If Harper does not find controversy the press will invent one for him.
    5. Harper will have to deal with the Liberal legacy before he can get some real work done. If he doesn't deal with it in the beginning it will come back to haunt him. If he does deal with it he won't get any real work done. This will make him look ineffective. The press will have a field day with this.
    6. As Harper pointed out during the election campaign, many positions of influence are held by former Liberals or individuals whose allegiance is Liberal. This will make it very difficult to get anything done. Look at what Mulroney had to do to get anything done.

    Wow, this list is getting is getting long. There are other things I could put down but I'll stop here. My point is simply that Harper's time in office is not going to be a bed of roses. It think the article in the Calgary Sun is way to optimistic and underestimates the opposition, especially the Liberals.
