Are Liberals behind Layton smear? My Two Cent Theory
Okay, before my "fans" start finger pointing and saying that the Layton smear-story was from us, I thought I'd insert some logic into the discussion, and list some of the MANY logical reasons why this story DIDN'T come from us.
1) It came via SunTVNews. That in and of itself should tip people off that it's NOT from us, because it's too close to home, as it were. Think about it... with many folks accusing SunTV of being nothing more than a Tory puppet, any "scandalous" story from them will AUTOMATICALLY be assumed to be from us. Therefore, we'd give something like this to ANYONE but SunTV, to mitigate any potential fallout.
2) It came via SunTVNews... why on earth would we give a "scoop" like this to SunTV, right after they bit us over the fake Ignatieff photos? Yea... once bitten, twice shy. We'd take it somewhere else.
3) I'd love for ANYONE to show me ANY kind of electoral math where this story even POTENTIALLY helps us... cause it doesn't. There is NO WAY WHATSOEVER where the Tories are helped by this story... NONE. The "values voters" are already ours, so we don't gain there. The story smacks of a smear job, and we're suspect because it came from SunTV... we get HURT, not helped.
4) There's ONLY ONE PARTY that could in any possible way be helped by this story... and that's the Liberal Party of Canada. The story smacks of a "Hail Mary Pass" to save the furniture... NOT something the guy in the lead pulls out of his hat. One of my friends had suggested that it helps the Bloc more, but I disagree, because I don't think they have the sources and contacts on the ground in Toronto to be able to dig something like this up.
5) Further to #4, if this does cause some folks to reconsider their new found support for the NDP, where will they go? That's right... BACK to the Liberals. Again, this story helps the Liberals, NOT the Tories... hence, it's not from us.
Other thoughts? You'll note I'm not posting a link to the story itself, as I'm not in favour of pushing it whatsoever... but I AM interested in finding out the motivations of whoever passed the story on to SunTVNews.
NOTE: Due to the nature of this story, comments will be moderated... so play nice.

When the Toronto police were going after the massage palours - were other clients given the same gentle treatment, with just a verbal reminder that these were questionable establishments? If I was charged in one of these "raids", I would want to know why Layton was treated so kindly. Cheers.

While my net Sat. receiver was being hooked up and I couldn't access SNN I read on SDA that Cats Meat Kinsella had pronounced it true..and that was right at the very first few minutes of this starting.
Like you say, it's probably a Liberal thing. Am I ever glad that we now have Sun News Network. It's like a breath of fresh air in Canada. The MSM will basically not cover it, unless it's to smear SNN or the Conservatives. Can you imagine what they'd do if it were PMSH hiring a prostitute?

The question is if this story is true then your argument fails, but if its a lie well that's another story.

According to Chow (aka Mrs. Layton) some of the general details are correct

Are the Liberals the ONLY party who could have leaked this?
A month ago the NDP were expected to either hold what they had or lose a few seats. After 8 years it was expected that Layton would step down.
It expected that he'll be replaced by Mulclair, who is known to have a testy relationship with Layton.
Now, with the NDP surging in the polls Layton's leadership is solid unless he can't translate that support into seats. Something like this could stop the momentum.
If Layton is seen to have blown this historical opportunity the knives might be out for him and Mulclair will be waiting to step in.

Layton admitted that police advised him that they were monitoring the massage parlour for criminal activity
I agree the story was provided by Liberals Warren Kinsella stated he knew about it 2 years ago

Just another Tory smear tactic....attack someone else.
The OPP needs to see who accessed this info and for what purposes.
Your candidate in Vaughn sure has a lot of experience with the police....hahahha...just teasing...

Hi CC,
I've been avoiding the so-called blogosphere during the last several weeks because of other commitments, including a renewed commitment to my sanity. Obviously... I have commitment issues. At least when it comes to my sanity. That said, it's nice to see (or... uhhhh... read) you again.
I don't think that any political party was behind this directly. A recent Globe and Mail story quotes Chief Blair saying (or suggesting) that a former police officer is behind the leak:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/layton-confident-voters-will-dismiss-massage-parlour-smear-campaign/article2005429/
(The reference is at the very end of the article).

This is interesting: "2) It came via SunTVNews... why on earth would we give a "scoop" like this to SunTV, right after they bit us over the fake Ignatieff photos? Yea... once bitten, twice shy. We'd take it somewhere else."
This suggests that you [the Conservatives] "gave" a "scoop" to SunTVNews that was "fake". The story of Layton visiting a massage parlor that wasn't entirely above board seems to be true. Looks like he was there, though it also seems that he did nothing wrong. Lots of operations conduct both legitimate and illegitimate activities. In fact... that probably describes most governments. It might even describe some of Harper's advisers, who have been in the news recently...

I think that this story, if it is to have any effect, is more in the interest of the CPC than the Liberals. It's in the Conservatives' interest to try to keep popular support for the Liberals and NDP as evenly divided as possible. If the NDP is suddenly ahead of the Liberals, it might be prudent to try to bring the NDP down. You are right that this would not result in more votes for the CPC. But the nature of the Liberal/NDP split will affect the fortunes of the Conservatives.
That's not to say that the Liberals aren't behind it. It's even conceivable that the NDP is behind it. I think Karl Rove once used a similar tactic... But as I said above, I'm not convinced that any party in particular is behind the "leak". It would be interesting to see where the information came from, however.

"You" is plural, I assume (given the "s" a the end of "idiot"). But ... all of us? If so, then your accusation surely requires some explanation. Especially since the word idiot (stupid person) originally (or etymologically) refers to someone who lives in his/her own world - from the Greek "idios" meaning "own, private".
So if we are all idiots, we are all idiots in our own way. (Hm... maybe that means that smart people/cosmopolitan people are all the same).

It's time soldier. time to come clean and wash yourself of sin. Do not put Canada in a precarious position and cost it its democratic principle.
