Why Iggy must tread carefully on Prorogue issue

Been thinking about this whole tempest in a teapot from the anti-prorogue folks, and how it has the potential to backfire HUGE on Iffy's Liberals. Just stop for a moment, and think it all through logically... either way he plays it, Iffy's screwed.

If Iggy tries to fan the flames of discontent to capitalize on the supposed "anger" out there, then what's going to happen when he backs down in the Spring and votes in FAVOUR of our Throne Speech and Budget? All of a sudden, all that anger is going to swing from Harper to Iggy... and you know that Jumpin Jack's going to make sure Iggy wears the blame for propping up the Tories.

Option Two, which seems to be the course being taken so far by the Liberals, is that Iggy's gonna try and keep his head down on this one. But that's another failing strategy, as some folks are ALREADY starting to ask, "Where's Iggy on this issue? Why isn't HE speaking out? We hear some of his MP's saying things, what about Iggy?" Then once again, when his Liberals back down and vote confidence, WHAMO... Jack beats them over the head with it yet again.

Either way, Iffy gets screwed on this issue, no matter which option he takes. Furthermore, NDP Leader Jack Layton can jump on the bandwagon, look like the hero in the eyes of disaffected Liberals who are angry with Iffy for supporting Harper, and further grows his tent.

Iffy, LOSE-LOSE. Jack, WIN-WIN. Harper... BIGGER WIN-WIN, as he either remains PM, or gets a Spring election, one where Iffy's already taken a severe body blow.

So I must say I'm somewhat amused to see various Libloggers signing on to the anti-proroguation rallies, like YappaDingDing, The Progressive Right, PoliticsCanada, Scott Tribe, former Liberal candidate and CAITI blogger Brent Fullard, Impolitical, Liberal PC(O) candidate for VP of Organization and blogger James Morton, and rival Liberal PC(O) candidate for VP of Organization and blogger James Curran, all jumping on the bandwagon. I suppose it's going to make the climbdown all that more entertaining, when these guys blow their collective stacks at Iffy for supporting the Harper Government.

UPDATE: Paul Wells nails it today in his post... his message to the Opposition? Go Big, or GO HOME!

Canadians can understand that Harper and his caucus have taken a 2 month vacation at our expense during a recession. If the opposition can get a clue and play this angle, you may be a little less smug this spring.

Vacation? Umm, maybe you wanna check Stephen Taylor's story today... Tory MP's are back in their ridings working, the PM is in the PMO working, meanwhile Jack's off scuba diving in Belize, and Iffy's off in Europe somewhere. Gotta love his post title... "Michael Ignatieff’s Prorogation Vacation"

Oh, maybe you should talk to some Tory MP's while you're at it... I know several of them personally, and let me tell you, they're some of the hardest working people I've ever met... ANYWHERE, BAR NONE!

It's not 2 months off, it's 15 days of smear and whining we are going to not have to endure.

Hey silly nony....get your facts straight....the house wasn't to sit until Jan 25 - so between Jan 25 and March 3 is 36 days - given weekends and the Olympics...just how do you come up with your 2 month vacation.

Funny how the left is stretching the truth around this - especially given the prorogations and 'breaks' the previous liberal government took on many many occasions.

Nice try, nony, but you can't keep lying like this, most Canadians are smarter than this. And if they are like you, and believe this, they are just not thinking.

Has vacationing in Gagetown messed up your sense of logic? This isn't about Ignatieff. He can go suck on a lemon for all I care while he's backpacking in France for all I care. This is about this Prime Minister disrespecting Parliament, because frankly Parliament is all the people have to keep the government accountable.

If I can interest you in a bit of revisionist history, let's look at the 1956 Pipeline Debate. The Louis St. Laurent Liberal gov't involved closure on the debate without even starting, and this led to a month long filibuster by the Tories. In the same fashion, St. Laurent and C.D. Howe, his Industry minister, disrespected Parliament by trying to ram through this legislation. They didn't care what the people thought: they just wanted to get it done.

The only difference here is Harper is proroguing Parliament, thereby getting nothing done. What's even funnier is he killed his own crime legislation. Suck on that!

Interestingly enough Top Can, I think Parliament will get MORE done by prorouging... as we'll be able to actually pass legislation, rather than have the Liberals hold things up indefinately in the Senate.

Sober Second Thought, I'm all for that. Partisan Foot Dragging, not so much.

You're right. It's not the 2months. It's the hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars lost on just reprinting those stupid ass bills and committee briefs over and over and over again.

"Tempest in a Teapot"? If you're idea of prorogation to avoid a parliamentary subpoena and shut down and an investigation on detainee abuse equates with a tussle over tea, I wonder what would really make you mad...

I didn't get past the first few sentences because when someone proclaims to be a Christian, and proceeds to throw insults, then I don't believe they are a very good Christian. I thought Jesus taught to respect your fellow man? No wonder your religion and your leader are going down the tubes. No insult there, simply a proclamation of a fact.

    Namaste

Of course you won't post this, but it's enough that you've read it. Your God is ashamed of you.

If you make it up, they will believe it? Ok, this is the way I see it, Ignatieff is the only viable option to get rid of Harper. Harper is in shit up to his neck, so he has to force an election or lose a chance at even a minority. But, 200 000 people have made a choice already and they represent a big change in political atmosphere. They represent the disenfranchised, who this time will think twice. Just like the Pinto burst into flames on impact, so will Harpers campaign with the electorate. The Conservative party has relied on splitting the vote, this game is done. So as Pinto points out, without much tact or grace, the voter is going to move their ballot. Of course Harper would like to keep the vote splitting happening, thus the very poorly written Christian Conservative message with demeaning characterization of Michale Ignatieff and even Jack Layton, by attacking and attempting to diminish them, exactly what was done to everyone that joined this group ie the chattering masses. It is very easy to make up names, and be simplistic, but when it comes down to honest and respectful debate the Conservatives always come up short. In the next election this will be the case again, they will show their true colours and further diminish their own status in the eyes of the public. In the end either the ICC International Criminal Courts will indite Harper, McKay and Occonor along with others. They will face Justice in an international court with Islamic judges and Christian judges, who are ethical and uncorrupted. The average time served for such crime is several years, this will be there wake up call. In the meantime the electorate will embrace either a coalition or the Liberal party to fill the vacuum, probably the Liberal party as they will seek the most stable solution and avoid further drama. Liberals will prove themselves worthy immediately by opening an Inquiry into the secret activities of the Conservative party and its associates including the Northern Foundation and the Conservative far right. This will lead to criminal and civil charges for election fraud, for the in and out schemes and violations of the Charter of Rights, And that will just be the start, evidence of further acts of corruption and election fraud will lead to charges against previous MPs and their campaign teams for violation of the elections act and this will throw the Conservative party into a complete collapse. The progressives who have been isolated out the party will rebuild the party but will be unable to provide a viable alternative for several elections and will remain untrusted by the public as a whole.

Valkyri, if you could show me where I've "thrown insults", I'd be happy to try and rectify... are you referring to my use of the leader's well known nicknames, "Iffy" and "Jumpin Jack"? Or was it my use of the word "screwed", which accurately describes the situation that Iggy finds himself in right now?
