Committee Witnesses - Oppostion: 78 - Tories: 0
Maybe this is why the Tories have been blocking attempts by the Opposition to further probe our 2006 election expenses... because we knew it would turn into nothing more than a partisan FARCE.
Like I said... nothing more than a partisan FARCE on the part of the Opposition.
Shame on them, and shame on the partisan chair, Liberal MP Paul Szabo, for letting it descend into this.
I SAY WE PROROGUE PARLIAMENT, and put an end this despicable partisan grandstanding.

OTTAWA — Conservatives reacted with rage Wednesday after opposition MPs on the Commons ethics committee agreed to 78 potential witnesses for its inquiry into the Tory election ad controversy - but excluded every witness the Tories proposed.
Like I said... nothing more than a partisan FARCE on the part of the Opposition.
Shame on them, and shame on the partisan chair, Liberal MP Paul Szabo, for letting it descend into this.

I haven't been following the committee hearing as closely as you, would please comment on this paragraph:
"At this point, to their chagrin, the Conservatives realize every single name on their proposed witness list has been struck, with Sears being the last one. Ha. Well guys, that's because all the names have one thing in common: they have nothing to do with the committee terms of reference, and everything to do with your diversionary and irrelevant fishing expedition. So it's hard to have much sympathy for them."
This is from BCer in TO's posting. He seems to be following the hearing as well and comes to a different conclusion.

Yea, it's simple... his party's fishing expedition is okay by him, but our efforts to prove that we're being singled out isn't.
Real simple... partisanship.

I watched this procedure yesterday and I have to tell you, it was the worst speciment of "justice" I ever saw!... It was very evident Marlene Jennings and Martin had openly agreed with Szabo before entering the hearings just what was going to take place. It was agreed if the NDP would vote against allowing the liberal witnesses the Tories wanted to call, the liberals would not allow the Ndp witnesses the Toreis wanted to call, to prove that they were both doing the very same thing they are charging the Tories for doing... Szabo should be immediately removed as a chair, he is so liberal bias, what is he afraid off!... the Tories were proving just what they were saying all along, the other 2 parties did the same thing, and Martin moved to have the procedure of examining the witness closed... liberals agreed - it was over... the block also voted with Jennings - the Tories were also calling a witness to prove the Block did the same thing, and Szabo had every Tory witness removed from the list...and only the Tory witnesses. If Szabo though he was getting brownie points, I sure hope every canadian is able to see that - it is a disgrace. Marlene Jennings, Martin and Szabo should be ashamed of themselves... Even though szabo is the liberals little wizzle - you can sure see why he has never been considered for a cabinet position even by his own party. He is really dirt and should be removed from anything that is considered Canadian. We are not like that - he belongs chairing Khadr's hearing - he belongs in that environment...

Thanks for your response. Would you please be more specific on which witnesses on the Liberal's witness list constitute a fishing expedition.
I haven't seen the list and I am trying to understand your point of view.

The entire process is a fishing expedition... instead of waiting for the courts to rule on it, they're just trying to make hay with this, rather than seeking to get to the real truth that all parties have practiced the exact same thing. (which is why the Opposition blocked all the witnesses we called, and why they stalled this Committee for months by not allowing the Committee to examine the electoral expenses of all parties)

First of all, Szabo eliminated 11 from the list of witnesses the conservatives wanted to question. They were the only ones he eliminated, no liberals, no NDP's no Blocks - just 11 Torie witnesses. Then Martin moved the list be excepted, with the addition of the removal of Bob Rae's Chief of Staff the Conservatives also wanted to question, so that was another Tory witness they eliminated. Then Marlene Jennings moved the motion of the 11 members that Szabo stuck be accepted, with the exception, she wanted Libby Davies eliminated. so - see the pattern, martin eliminated another Liberal that would show he did the same as they are saying the Tories were doing... and Jennings removed a NDP that the Toreis said were also doing the same things. They were becoming very, very nervous, things were definately not going their way...The Tories definately had Elections Canada on the "ropes" and Martin moved the discussion with this witness be stopped after 2 more people had a change to question him...Of course, the NDP and Liberals made up the majority - so it was passed... Szabo honestly should be sent to chair Khadr's trail, that is the only calibre he is capable of running....... to have him be considered a Canadian and have anything to do with Canadian politics, is a disgrace to our system. If anyone in his area ever saw his performance, they would be "sick to their stomachs" to think they sent him to Ottawa... What a jerk he is!!
