Global Warming... ???

My co-worker passed this on to me. He dug up an old TIME Magazine article from 1974 online in TIME's online archives regarding the changing weather patterns on the planet...
As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval.
That's what we've been hearing for years for supporters of Kyoto and the left, right? READ THE REST OF THE SAME PARAGRAPH...
However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.
What a difference a few decades make, eh?

How about that, eh? "The trend shows no sign of reversing. So then, let me get this straight... if things had been cooling back then for the previous three decades, and now things have been warming for the three decades since... doesn't that mean we're back to square one from where we were 60 years ago?

Give the TIME article a read for yourself!

I had read about the "Global Cooling" fears 30 years ago.

I still think it is laughable that we can't predict what the weather will be tomorrow yet Gloabl Warming proponents can predict what it will be 100 years from now. I don't really doubt that the earth has warmed (slightly)but I do doubt that there is any way to prove that it is anything more than a burp when compared to the history of the earth.

Gloabl Warming has become highly politicized because it is a useful political tool. Its a great way to convince people and gov'ts to reduce their pollution, on the scary side it seems to be part of a bigger plan to impose economic equalization on a global scale.

However the main problem still remains, science is not supposed to be politized! Regardless of the political climate of the day, science is supposed to remain impartial. Science must never pick sides, when it does scary things happen. (see Nazi experimentation & eugenics)

Time has it wrong on both occasiosn.

The real problem is the sky is falling. A piece almst hit me yesterday.

I have taken to tree hugging and driving a Prius to save the planet from the falling sky.

Where is the UN on this issue. What is my government doing ??

Where are the Aboriginal sky experts telling me that we have to divert $billlins into thier communities to preserve valuable stine age traditions ??

The sky is falling, the world is coming to an end and the CBC remains isolated into its COTU HQ incapable of understanding "science"

This blog actually disgusts me. The article was written 32 years ago! Do you not think that any significant scientific discoveries pertaining to global warming have been made in this time? And haven't we had increasingly peculiar meteorological events occur in the last 32 years, that SUGGEST the climate is growing warmer?
The proof is all around us if you just look (i.e. an increase in the annual number of hurricanes, species of animals moving farther north to find cooler habitats)- and all you can do is criticize the 'leftist' individuals and the Kyoto Protocol? This disgusts me as much as you would be disgusted, were I to criticize your religious beliefs.
And on that note, being made as a child of God and being born in God's divine image, should it not be your responsibility to be a custodian of sorts, responsible for the world in which you live in? The overall impression I get from this blog is that you're careless about the environment- a poor trait for any soul who aspires to become a political leader.

The Time article was very indicative of the state of knowledge in the 1970s. Assertions about the coming ice age were repeatedly made. It was even an underlying premise of Solomon Gursky Was Here by Mordechai Richler.

The article is an excellent reminder of the pitfalls of extrapolation. That does not mean that we should ignore evidence that the climate may be warming. But we should take the warnings of impending climactic upheaval with a grain of salt.

The worst thing we can do though is to take CNN and Weather Channel reporting as gospel. That can only lead to bad policy.

I don't pretend to know if the World is getting colder or warmer. All I know is that pumping millions of tonnes of guck into the atmosphere can't be good for us. This is my only reason for supporting the Kyoto protocol. We can see the direct effects of dumping poison into the air; smog alerts, burned trees, respiratory problems, etc. I don't know of a single person that will argue about that!

Actually, I'm the kind of guy who turns my car engine off when idling... and I ride my bike to work. I also recycle, and try my hardest NOT to produce waste.

I firmly believe that it is our responsibility to protect this planet that the Lord God Most Holy has given to us... and I think we've done a HORRIBLE job of that.

That said, Kyoto is not the way to go. As I've said before, Kyoto is NOT an enviornmental protection protocol, it's a wealth re-distribution scheme... nothing more.

The main problem with Global Warming is that there is just not enough evidence to show that man's activities are the cause. Recorded temperatures do show a overall surface temperature increase of about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the last 100 years. But satellite imaging does not show an overal atmospheric increase in temperature. Part of the reason for a higher surface temp is that there is more paved surfaces, absorbing and radiating more heat that say a grassy feild. This is reflected in tree core samples that do not reflect the increase in recorded temp for coresponding years.

From 1945-1970 the earth cooled, yet there was considerable fossil fuel consumption. Begining around 1000 AD there was something called the Medieval Warm Period, which persisted until the Little Ice Age in 14th and 15th centuries both lasted for several hundred years, and what do you know; no cars in sight!

    Consider this qoute:

"No matter if the science is all phony, there are collateral environmental benefits....Climate change provides the greatest [chance] to bring about justice and equality in the world" Christine Stewart, former Canadian Minister of the Environment

Kyoto is far more about economic equalization. Like I said earlier science must never choose sides, science can not be politisized, it leads to bad science.

I fully agree that we have not been good stewards of God's creation, and we need to clean up our acts, but I don't think politisizing science is the way to do it. Creating "Green" cities would go much further.
I don't deny that the earth appears to be warming slightly, but I'm not sure that it isn't supposed to be. 100 years of recorded data is nothing when compared to the history of the earth.

1 degree is just a burp.

"We have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have. This "double ethical blind" we frequently find ourselves in cannot be solved by any formula. Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest. I hope that means being both"

Stephen Schneider, Stanford climatologist and winner of the MacArthur Fellow

....this is not a scientific approach!

Sorry J, but that is no reason to support Kyoto. Kyoto addresses the so-called Greenhouse Gasses like Carbon Dioxide (what you exhale, for example). It does absolutely NOTHING about pollution...

    another_sean,

The Kyoto Protocol encourages the use of less dirty methods of generating energy, wind farms for example. That brings the indirect benefit of reducing guck.

Sorry, I should have explained my reasoning.

So if a better plan (one that doesn't seek global equalization, or trade in pollution rights) to reduce pollution was to replace it you would not have a problem with that, right?

Right. We can pursue other agendas in other ways. Let's keep a clean environment as a non political as possible.
