We SHOULD be able to trust our government

I heard a show on CFRB (Toronto) on Saturday morning. I keep hearing the host and all the other cynics saying, "Well, if the other guys get in, they'll just do the same thing as the Liberals... they will be just as corrupt, etc."

Well, I believe that we should be able to EXPECT a party to keep its word once in power. I'm only 27, so perhaps I've not had enough life experience to become a cynic yet. But there is one thing that we all have to remember when talking to people who are cynical... Mr. Harper has promised that his FIRST ACT if he becomes Prime Miniser will be to introduce the "Accountability Act" in the House of Commons. The NDP will likely support it as they have their own Ethics package, (perhaps a melding of the two), the BQ may be onside, and if the Liberals, as the offical Opposition, oppose it, you know they will get HAMMERED by the media for opposing a bill designed to clean up the mess that they made.

And once that is law, perhaps we will once again be able to begin to put our trust in our government. It, for me, this is one of the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS in this election... do we want more of the same old style politics, or do we REALLY want to clean things up and try to make our politicians accountable by coming to an all-party consensus and making parliament work?

It's your choice Canada. When you're talking to the cynics, remind them of Mr. Harper's pledge. We're going to be in a minority parliament, so if he breaks his word, you KNOW the Liberals and the others will pounce and force an election, which they would then likely win.

CHOOSE CHANGE!!!

I've found it's just a cover for sloppy non-critical thinking. Anytime I've questioned someone who says this I invariably find they don't know the platforms, don't understand the issues and usually don't bother to vote.

ndOne of my favorite postings by Kate was this one http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/002006.html read it.

I agree with you the accountability issue is huge. If the CpC pass that law I wouldn't be too concerned about anybody being in power.

I find this kind of "thinking" to be one of the causes of the social malaise we experience today!
Their simplistic message of cynicism resonates with the poorly educated and those who have little or no incentive to do anything but complain about their lot in life and the state of their world.

The insidious thing is how well this plays into the hands incompetent and dishonest governments.

The one really aggravating thing about this kind of attitude is when otherwise intelligent people repeat the tripe!
For instance, did the moderators or hosts of the shows where these call ins expressed their opinions have any comment or rebuttal to them? Or were those shows simply encouraging the continuation of the theme?

And what happened if someone called in a dissenting POV?

FYI a friend of mine in the market research game was attending one of the US based "ambush" shows with the producers and sponsors> This was about 15 years ago> my friend and one of the sponsors questioned how the shows low end tone really appealed to "mainstream" America! The producers answer was " Mainstream? This IS America! " the last decade and a half have proved that man right!
The Bar is set lower with each passing day! And the lowered expectations of people in general is resulting in people that are generaly happier with lowered standards.

    PAYDAY for the LIberals!
