Parrish Likes Harper GST Plan
Greg at Political Staples says here that Carolyn Parrish made a statement supporting Harper's plan to reduce the GST by 2%. Well, I can't find that statement posted anywhere online, not even on her website. HOWEVER, in digging on her site, take a look what I found.
She suggested that Paul Martin should reduce the GST by 2% way back in November 1995!!! To quote:
She suggested that Paul Martin should reduce the GST by 2% way back in November 1995!!! To quote:
A two percent reduction in the GST - one percent in 1996, and a further one percent in 1997 - would show immediate action on the part of the federal government to the limit of its capabilities, without a drastic reduction in revenues. It would be positive news to the Canadian taxpayer and a sign that government cutbacks are getting Canada back on a responsible economic course. It would also be a demonstration of honesty and integrity in government that Canadians are sincerely looking for.WOW! My opinion of her just went up a few notches!

What I don't understand is why we have to wait for the decrease...why not just drop it to the 5% right away. I'm sure that with the extra money in our pockets, we'll just keep spending it until it is all taxed away, anyway.

Tax cuts have a tendancy to increase revenues over time. Cutting by 1% then waiting for the revenues to come back up natrually due to increased productivity before cutting the second per cent seems like a good idea.
