Liberals to Legalize Prostitution

Hummm... seems that the media missed this one. It's from the Liberal Party's Womens Commission, and according to their website, this was adopted as offical party policy:
85 -Sex Worker Rights

WHEREAS officially the sex trade is not criminal;

WHEREAS section 213 of the Criminal Code of Canada still forbids communicating for the purposes of sex trade-related acts;

WHEREAS fear of ticketing and judicial consequences incurred from section 213 drive sex trade workers into dangerous and harmful locations;

WHEREAS criminalizing acts related to the sex trade also perpetuates a negative social stigma surrounding sex trade workers;

WHEREAS the sex trade is a profession central to the subsistenceof many Canadian citizens who deserve the same workplace safety and social respect as any other member of our society;

AND WHEREAS we must never again have the tragedy of 50 women missing from Vancouver’s downtown eastside without notice;

BE IT RESOLVED that the Liberal Party of Canada support review of Section 213 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

BE IT RESOLVED that if Section 213 of the Criminal Code is foundto be harmful to the sex trade workers, the Liberal Party of Canada reconsider the need to urge the Federal Government to remove Section 213 of the Criminal Code.

    Good. Prostitutes deserve as much professional protection as the rest of us, and prostitutes and tax collectors (hmmm... perhaps we could paraphrase that for modern times as saying prostitutes and homosexuals) will enter the Kingdom of Heaven before most religious people (Christians included) will. All IMHO, of course.

    You do realize that prostitution is already legal in Canada (as is the objectification of "some sicko's pleasures"), right? :)

    Yes, actually it is. Dig into it a little more and you'll see that it is.

    Yes, sadly, it is legal to exchange money for sexual favours. It is illegal to solicit funds for sexual favours - it is illegal to ask, but it is not illegal to pay.

    I totally agree with Sweden's approach (and this is prety much the only agreement I have with Sweden politically) - eliminate penalties for prostitution (or solicitation) but seriously increase penalties for johns and pimps. They have seen huge successes in helping women out of the sex trade since introducing this. They saw a 2/3 reduction in the number of prostitutes in Sweden after introducing these measures. And it didn't involve pugblic endorsement of prostitution as a legitimate industry or the forcible creation of "red light districts".

    Gee what a great idea. They can create a Federal Department of HO, have a Minister of HO, Deputy Minister of HO, and a whole ministry of HO. They could have the "Head Office" in Ottawa, and buy up a bunch of HO-tels to conduct business out of. Then of course there would have to be a HO Union with many locals, and of course Union Bosses. What a great way to get tax $$$ that currently go to others. Hmmmm...on second thought with the cost of creating these ventures (Gun Registry etc.), and the gross inefficiency of a Federal Crown Corp. and the average Union negotiated wage of $5,000 per hour, they would likely have to charge ten grand "a crack" just to break even. Then no one would ever use the service, and the Libs would sell it for pennies on the dollar to their "Friends". So just keep it privatized.

    Gee, what a radical idea.

    Since prostitution isn't technically illegal, maybe we should review the criminal code to see if there are things in it that are putting prostitutes at greater risk to be abused or murdered!

    Prostitutes are commonly abused and murdered, and a committee of the Liberal party wants to review the criminal code, to see if anything in it is making matters worse.

    Imagine the conservative hyperbole if they had actually proposed DOING something, instead of just having a review!

    At least when the Tories were accusing the Liberals of "supporting child pornography" they were accusing them of wanting to change something from being illegal, to being legal. Now they're accusing the Liberals of wanting to legalize something that already IS legal.

    Look out everyone. I hear the Liberals want to legalize cigarettes too!
