Garth Turner: Still a Tory at heart?

I dunno, you tell me what you think of this quote:

"Truth be told, hiking the sales tax [the GST] or goosing gasoline prices [via the Carbon/gas tax] would be a suicide mission for any party. So don’t expect to see me voting that way. Ever."

Wow... already bucking Dion and the Party line on the new carbon/gas tax idea, before it's even fully made public.

Hey Mr. Dion, we warned you that he'd be a headache... but thanks for not listening to us. ;-)

I understand that you're driven by blind partisanship. However, try being truthful occasionally.

There are no plans to increase the GST or to raise federal tax on gasoline. You should know that this is CPoC spin.

If you care to refute this, please provide links to LPC policy that supports these lies.

Being so untruthful is decidedly icky in a Christian. Think about it.

Dion said he was considering raising the gst. You can clse your eyes and s he did not, but the facts are the fcts. Don't hate on CC b/c he is repeating what Dion said.

Nice spin attempt... but like most Liberal endeavors, a miserable failure. CC doesn't have to refute ANYTHING... that's a quote from ol' Garfy boy himself. So go over to your *snicker* golden boy and ask him about it. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to talk about it - and himself - ad nauseam.

And regarding liberal "policy" (which is tough since they don't actually stand for anything), you know as well as we do that it's not been declared formal policy - it's your lord and master the witless Dion who's been publicly flaunting it as a campaign strategy in the media. So again - you have a problem with it, complain to the fiberals... not that they'd give you a straight answer.

Garth is spinning this the way he wants it to look, but it's wishful thinking. He's trying to keep pretending that Dion never said he would raise the GST when he did, and he's trying to tow the party line that a tax increase of $17B subsidized by a $10B tax detour is "revenue neutral" (uh, what about the $7B difference?).

Garth's real problem is that he only agrees with himself 100% of the time and is never willing to make concessions on anything, which is what party politics is about. He's an indie candidate trying to pretend to be part of a party because he knows he'll never have power as an indie... power being the only thing that blowhard cares about.

Of course, to save face of being kicked out of the Liberal party too, he's going to learn the hard way that MP's need to make concessions in order to stay part of a party. Too bad he didn't learn that lesson when he was in the Conservatives, then he might have done more for his constituents. But, he has yet to learn that the world doesn't revolve around Garth.

Mr. Dion keeps saying that he wants to implement a "carbon tax" to change people's behaviour, while at the same time trying to say that it won't increase overall gasoline taxes... then what kind of behaviour exactly is he trying to modify? Either Mr. Dion is being deliberately dishonest about it, or he doesn't even know what behavioural changes he's trying to accomplish with it!

Any increase on carbon via taxes is going to hit folks in the wallet, eating up even bigger shares of the family budget... increased costs of materials, increased fuel costs for transportation (he ONLY promised not to increase GASOLINE taxes... no word on diesel, home heating oil, natural gas, propane, etc.) eventually means higher prices for goods for the average consumer... and any attempt to spin THAT any other way is in itself deceptive.

Don't forget jet fuel. The airline industry will take a pounding and pass on their pain to their customers, be it passenger travel or shipping.

What it boils down to is that a carbon tax will increase inflation - and not just by a little bit. The price of EVERYTHING will go up, not just carbon-based fuels.

I have a conspiracy theory. I think the libs know that with Dion at the helm they don't have a snowball's chance in Hell of ever winning. I think even Dion knows it. So he's gonna be the fall guy. Dion's going to go into the next election with the most hair-brained schemes possible that will result in the worst defeat for the liberals EVER. Then, in the aftermath, Dion will get turfed and the "new" liberals will come back and say "Look look - we're all sparkly and new. We know you didn't like that Dion guy but HEY, buddy, we got rid of him so it's safe to come home".

Fine by me if that happens... that means a CPC majority and FINALLY things can get done without all the BS in the house.

It's an invisible tax that the Liberals are going to implement. The kind that will get around the "Hey, no invisible taxes" that the GST stopped.

Companies will have to pay more to produce every kind of good. Therefore, the price of success goes way up.

You'll keep more of the money you earn, but you'll have to pay (substantially) more to live.

    This is a scary idea.

What's great about this is that everytime the word's "gas" and "tax" are mentioned by a Liberal MP, even when denying that they plan to tax gasoline, further cements the notion in voter's minds that they're considering rasing the taxes on gas.

Keep denying Libs, the more you say "no gas tax" the more you keep the issue in the front of voters minds!

Ha ha, bring on an election now, PLEASE!
