Hedy Fry talking about Crime
An interesting irony today, while flipping channels during the newshour. Was watching Global National, and they announced that Toronto has reached a dubious milestone... today, due to a brazen daylight murder, Toronto has tied the 2006 murder count, at 70 persons... with two months yet to go this year.
Then, I flipped over to CPAC, to see where things stood with the Liberal ammendment to the Throne Speech... and Hedy Fry was speaking. No kidding, these are the first words I heard come out of her mouth...
"Mr. Speaker, crime has actually gone down in this country... I'm not saying there's no crime, but it has gone down in recent years..."
Try telling that to the good people of Toronto, Ms. Fry.
So, my Liberal friends, let's get the "Tackling Violent Crime Act" passed ASAP, shall we?

Reported crime has gone down, because citizens everywhere know there is no use in filing the paperwork when nothing will happen and if anybody ever does get convicted, let alone charged, there is no punishment

And what's the point of reporting it or being a witness if the perpetrator is back out on bail the next day?

Noticed that the man gunned down was one of the creeps charged in the Jane Kreba murder..he was deep sixed leaving custody, and no doubt there will be murals springing up in his hood to honour this fine specimen of humanity..

There are many crime metrics. Murders in Toronto is an extremely small metric. Put all the metrics together and you've got an undeniable downward trend.
That bit in the throne speech about how Canadians are more scared now than they have been did not speak for me, and I know I'm not alone.

Dirk, yes, the stats may say that... but how much of it these days goes unreported?
I'm sorry, but the stats lie... crime is definately going up. It's really sad seeing it amongst the youth especially, but it seems that so many of our young people are simply out of control these days.
And no, I'm not "scared"... I just want it dealt with. I want people to once again have the healthy respect they used to have for those in authority... maybe that would help, but I don't know.
Quite frankly, they need Christ...

Do you have some proof to back this claim? Not saying it's not true, but I'd want to see some evidence before I believed it.

Respect for authority (which is really nothing more than respect for the people who have the power) is rarely healthy. Love, compassion and empathy towards fellow humans... these are the things we need to cultivate. Unfortunately, not enough of us seem to want to promote these things and would rather go the easy route and promote fear, greed and authority.

Respect for authority is very healthy, and very necessary.
To ensure a functioning and safe country, people have to respect both the laws of that country, and the people charged with enforcing those laws.
If you disagree with a particular law, then lobby to have it changed. If a particular law enforcement agent does something to discredit himself or herself, then under those circumstances, a lack of respect for him or her may be called for.
As a default position, though, we should respect the laws of our land, follow them insofar as they remain the laws of our land, and we should respect authority.
This is very basic common sense, and it it sheer balderdash to argue otherwise.
