Dion is not a leader

Here we go again... not even three days, and he's flip-flopping on his own position regarding Jamie Carroll.

Janke's got all the details, as usual.
Liberal director to be shuffled out in bid to mend party divisions

OTTAWA - Liberal Leader Stephane Dion is poised to replace the party's national director amid criticism over alleged controversial comments and questionable judgment.

The decision to drop Jamie Carroll - who was hand picked by Dion for the job - is part of an effort to quell dissent in the party. It also follows calls for Carroll's head from deputy leader Michael Ignatieff and senior Quebec Liberals.

Sources say Carroll, who is expected to be given a new role, will be replaced by Marc Lavigne, who quit last month as Carroll's deputy.

The move is part of a broader shakeup Dion is expected to make Wednesday aimed at shoring up his shaky leadership and restoring party unity in the wake of the Liberals' dismal showing in three Quebec byelections last month.

Dion plans to shuffle his shadow cabinet and make changes in his office, including bringing more Quebecers into his inner circle and naming Johanne Senecal as his principal secretary.

Senecal, who worked in Jean Chretien's office and for Dion when he was Chretien's unity minister, will fill the gap left by Marcel Masse who left the Opposition leader's office for health reasons.

Quebec party brass and MPs have been demanding Carroll's head since a closed-door meeting last week at which he was purportedly dismissive of suggestions that the leader needs more francophone Quebecers in his inner circle.

Witnesses said Carroll remarked that if he hired more Quebecers, then he'd have to hire more Chinese.

Carroll has also faced criticism for the party's fundraising woes and for accusing former leadership candidates of trying to sabotage Dion.

Ignatieff met privately with Dion last spring to suggest that Carroll be fired.
