The word "Progressive"

A lot of issues posted here recently have sparked debate, mostly between "conservatives" and "progressives". I hate the current use of the word "progressive", because it usually entails the acceptance of vaules I disagree with, such as SSM or abortion. It's a word that's being used to divide the right... with non-"progressives" being attacked by both the left and members of our own party.

However, Upper Canada Catholic has written a great summary for all you "progressives" on why we don't consider ourselves to be "progressive".

    It's all about perception.
With the word Liberal having been thoroughly and permanently tarnished by the left, they now need a new banner to wave as they try to spread their BS.
This new banner is the term "Progressive".

There is nothing progressive about the socialist agenda because it is all about tearing down what others have built.

I agree that political language has in many ways been hijacked by the left in popular usage, but "progressive" as economic category definitely refers to something that has a larger benefit to the poorer than the richer.

Well, the lefties have to call themselves something don't they? Even though it has ceased to have any meaning, I guess "progressive" still sounds better than "insane"...

I think Red Tories would be far more comfortable in today's Conservative Party than legit Blue Tories, in my opinion. I am a moderate myself, my big issues are development of bio-diesel and regressive tax elimination (i.e. GST). The Conservative Party was the only party to address those concerns in the last election.

As a former hard-right thinker, I would never have been happy with the Conservative Party.

you're free to pursue your values as long as they don't interfere with my rights. it's pretty simple.

The left wing have tried to hijack the word "progressive". I am right wing and I consider myself progressive. In fact it was one of the first pieces I wrote when I started blogging.

"For fun, I poked around a bit and read about the Progressive Parties that appeared in the US every now and then in the first half of the 1900s. While different, these parties all embraced various forms of social welfare, worker protection, and environmental protection."

And the Conservative Party doesn't embrace any of these things to any extent? ;)
