Liberals and "Progressives"
What a great post on "progressives" by Steve Janke.

I don't really agree with his definition of progressive. I would consider myself a progressive conservative, which means that change for change sake would be pointless, but change for meaningfull betterment of society is necessary.
Gay marriage for example, in the authors view it didn't strengthen the institution of marriage because it didn't improve birthrates, an arbitrary benchmark set by him which, for obvious reasons, could not be met by same sex couples. However, if you measure progress in a different way, say the increase in wellbeing of gay couples and the greater sense of committment these couples have to eachother due to being married , then one would have to say society was strengthened.
My benchmark is about as arbitrary as the authors, so one will have to conclude that progress is in the eye of the beholder.

Well put. I'm surprised you can find the time to post, what with your obligations to the Dallas Mavericks and all...
