Welcome to the fold Mr. Fantino!
Congrats on a hard fought, and well deserved, upset last night in Vaughan for Julian Fantino, one of Canada's newest Memebers of Parliament. With a hard fought 997 vote margin, Mr. Fantino stole for the CPC a supposedly "safe" Liberal seat, even with all the resources thrown at them by Ignatieff and the Liberal Party of Canada.
For Mr. Ignatieff, however, last night was not a total loss... in what's sure to shock many, the Liberals managed to upset the NDP in Winnipeg North, and stole from them what thought to have been a safe NDP seat. In all likelihood, look for this seat to swing back to the NDP in the next General Election, as it may well have been low voter turnout that allowed the Libs to swipe this one.
Last nights results do mean one all important thing, however... NO SPRING ELECTION. If the NDP are losing seats to the Liberals, with a guy like Ignatieff at the helm, I'm guessing that they'll think twice before pulling the trigger. And with Iffy losing seats to Mr. Harper in the GTA, right on the doorstep of "Liberal" Toronto, look for them to also dial down the rhetoric somewhat.

your comment about a spring election is one of the best of all the comments I have read on various blogs this morning. I suspect "Jack" is looking over his shoulder and "Iggy" is just looking!!

The fact that someone as high profile as Fantino didn't win by a landslide has to be troublesome. Especially with automated phone calls from Don Cherry being sent out, Fantino, regardless of his political affiliation, should have romped. Why anyone would vote for a candidate who avoids the all-candidates debates is beyond me.
Conservative voters demand very little from their candidates, and it shows.

Exactly how can you claim to be a Christian and support Mr. Fantino who have targeted the residents of Caledonia, allowed serious violence to occurred, wrote a letter of support for a native thug who assaulted police and Gary McHale, was ordered by a Superior Court Judge to face a criminal charge for threatening elected officials and countless other un-Christian acts as recorded in Christie Blatchford's book and in various court documents?
I would think a Christian would stand against injustice and the victimization of innocent people. I guess the desire for one more seat over-rules one's Christian values.

It's quite simple, Mr. "Gary McHale"... I hold Mr. McGuinty accountable for those things, NOT Mr. Fantino.
I don't blame the guy in the trenches, I blame the guy giving the orders. And while yes, Fantino was giving the DIRECT orders to his staff, it was Mr. McGuinty who effectively tied his hands by setting an idiotic tone for the situation.

Goodbye Mr. McHale... used to be a fan, but you've just become a blowhard.

CC: You have my congratulations.
But I'm not sure the election was "hard fought"... Fantino sees to have "coasted" into office. Which is understandable under the circumstances.
Oh, and can we all to stop using words like "stole" in situations like this? The seat belongs to the people, and they choose who sits in it between elections.
Is it just me or am I sounding more populist than usual?

Not just you Anon1152... and couldn't agree with you more about it being "The People's Seat". ;-) It bugs me when Liberals treat seats like they "belong" to them, so I guess it's just my unconcious efforts to goad them by saying we "stole it". ;-)
I do say it was hard fought though, with the number of doors that Julian knocked on... it took a lot of direct talking to voters to win this one.

Well... you do remember how Christianity began (and how Jesus of Nazareth ended), right?

"NO SPRING ELECTION", unless PMSH makes bill C-49 a confidence motion. The Liberals said they would vote against it, after all. However, if it turns out to be a confidence motion, the Lib's will either suddenly support it, or NOT support it, and tell everyone to stay home.

Caledonia was a disaster, but I would very much like Mr McHale to describe in detail just how he thinks Mr Falintino should have reacted. We all have knowledge of places where the police think they know better than the politicians: they're called 'police states'. Is that what he wants for Ontario?

Sorry Frances, but "Mr. McHale" earned himself a ban... something I RARELY do around here. But I'm not inclined to let him use MY blog as his little soapbox. I followed him and was a fan for a little while, but his antics and continual incitement of confrontation eventually turned me off, and is something that I won't support anymore.
