Actually to me this is somewhat concerning. The authorities seem to be tasering everybody these days: children, old ladies, animals(?). Is this an indication that we have gone a bit too far with the use of this device?

The best way not to get tasered is not to run on a professional playing field. And, Im not sure Alan where kids and old ladies have been tasered...unless you do.

"... serves the kid right."
You nailed it, he was a kid. A kid. Having some (believe it or not) HARMLESS fun. Nobody was getting hurt, there was nothing being damaged.
I realize the cop had to taze him because he was too fat to catch him, but seriously, there were six guys on the field chasing the kid down. He wasn't getting away.
For this to happen at the same time that the RCMP are strengthening their guidelines for using tasers up here in Canada, limiting them to situations where suspects are "actively causing harm or when they have a reasonable belief that harm is imminent" is ironic.
To laugh at this abuse of power is detestable.

"Harmless fun"? Get real... we have rules for a reason. One of the rules when visiting a stadium is "Don't run onto the field". This is a rule so that we don't get dozens of fans every game interrupting things, so games take only 3 hours, instead of 5.
If folks make the choice to wantonly flaunt the rules, they must know that there are serious consequences for their actions. With the invention of the Taser, the people who enforce the rules have a new tool. Now that it has been put to use in this very public manner, folks who might consider stupid things like this will have to stop for an extra moment and thing to themselves, "What if these guys are carrying Tasers? Do I want to take that risk?"
I, for one, THINK THAT'S A GOOD THING. Getting morons to use a braincell or two is something we should encouraging... as opposed to your philosophy of "anything goes".

As a security officer myself I give mad props to the officer who tasered him.
